After the establishment of the "People's Resistance," Ren Tianshi served as the captain and commander of the People's Resistance Brigade; he shared happiness and hardship with the soldiers, sleeping in straw beds, eating brown rice, drinking pickle soup, and often treating diseases for the soldiers and the masses. In January 1947, Ren Tianshi, who had served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Central China Prefecture Committee and minister of social affairs, was arrested in Shanghai and secretly told the organization in prison that "personal life and death do not matter."
