Bai Juyi (772-846) was a famous poet of the Tang Dynasty. When he was appointed to the history of Suzhou, he chiseled the Shantang River and the Tiger Hill around the mountain river, built the Shantang Road (Baigong Embankment), and planted thousands of peach willows.
